Saddam's Sentance

Saddam's sentance might determine who controls Congress.

If they sentance Saddam to death, I bet there will a spike in violence in Iraq, but in the long run his execution will reduce violence. There's no telling how many lives could have been saved had they executed Saddam much quicker. If they allow Saddam to live, I think the violence will escalate. Saddam loyalists will be encouraged, Shiites will be scared, and Iraqi's will lose faith in their government, so I don't think this will happen.

Democrats have been trying to make this election about Iraq, and the timing of Saddam's sentance will probably dominate our news until the election, so in at least one way, the Democrats will be right. Control of Congress may hinge on Saddam's sentance. I think if Saddam gets the death penalty, Republicans will benefit from some vindication of their strategy. It would help energize the Republican base. If Saddam gets life in prison, right-wingers will be disappointed, and Democrats, even though they oppose the death penalty, will call it a failure.

I predict that Saddam will get the death penalty.
