Cato explains that nobody knows ANWR's worth because politicians, not the marketplace, are debating it. ANWR should be opened to the market so the value of its oil and its wilderness can be determined.
Cato understands that government aristocrats are addicted to subsidies. Like all forms of welfare, subsidies are bad for both recipient and provider, making the recipient dependent on them instead of achieving maximum productivity, and giving the providers power they use for their own purposes. Nuclear and oil subsidies are just as bad as subsidies for solar and wind power.
Cato recommends the Fed raise interest rates to send a clear signal it intends to fight inflation.
Cato remembers Alexander Solzhenitsyn for his scathing criticism of the Soviet state and more.
Robert Novak is retiring because of a dim prognosis for a brain tumor. Bummer.
Cato compares Obama and McCain on health care.
Article claims that the Navy's newest ship, a stealth destroyer, has no ability to intercept missiles fired against it. How can that be? How could such a monumental screw-up have happened? Even for government bureaucracies, this is an amazing failure.
"Government: If you think the problems we create are bad, just wait until you see our solutions." Priceless.
Boortz points out that immediately after the minimum wage took effect, unemployment rose. The unemployment rate for teenagers is the highest since 1992. No mention of the minimum wage increase.
Portland stands up to Muslims asking for special treatment by using a government pool after hours and having only female lifeguards on duty. Good for Portland. In America, everybody is supposed to b equal in the eyes of the law, and that means no special treatment for anybody. On the flip side, a Tyson chicken plant will take away the Labor Day holiday from workers and replace it with Eid Al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday. That's baloney.
What a fantastic ad by McCain ridiculing Barack Obama's Messiah status. I like the Paris Hilton/ Britney Spears ad too, but I want to see McCain take on Obama on his hard-core socialist background and policies.
Obama continues to run with his tail between his legs from McCain's town hall debate offer.
Exxon-Mobile pays more in US taxes than it makes in after tax income in the US. Maybe we should levy a windfall taxes tax on the government.
Author blames capitalism for the end of capitalism. No. This is just a bizarre quote:
Let's be clear: It is not the protectionists of the AFL-CIO or CNN who are primarily to blame for the erosion of public support for trade in the United States, as bone-headed as they may be. The blame lies squarely with a business community that continues to support Republican politicians who refuse to raise the taxes and spend the money necessary to provide the economic safety net for American workers that a free-market economy has not, and will not, provide. In other words, because business won't support socialism, capitalism is dying.
Study with nice graph shows that public transportation isn't any more green than driving non-solo. But I'm sure the greenees would point out that if more people dumped their cars and got on public transportation, the public transportation energy use would remain pretty much constant, but the energy used by cars would be reduced. What they point out is that if we got rid of public transportation, and the people using it started carpooling, public transportation energy use would go down and car energy use would stay constant.
Anti-terrorism warship built from the steel from the World Trade Center. Excellent.
