An ethicist claims we have a duty to genetically engineer problems out of children. I can completely understand this point of view. If an analysis of your child showed he would be born with heart problems, and that gene therapy could get rid of that problem, then of course a parent should do it. But genetics are rarely that cut and dry. The alcoholism mentioned in the article is a good example. There is no gene for alcoholism. Environmental factors play a huge role in that. If you open the door to any genetic manipulation, you open it up to all genetic manipulation. And of course, only parents and doctors can make that call.
