Justice Dept. says waterboarding is not currently legal. Congress should make it legal ASAP. Only torture should be illegal, not safe, effective techniques like waterboarding.
US declassifies intelligence showing that Iran is developing a nuclear bomb so the IAEA can confront Iran on the issue.
Putin's final news conference as president. This doesn't mean much. He'll probably still run Russia as prime minister. But it does give the US leverage to deal with a new Russian president and a prime minister. We have an opportunity to play them off each other in the interest of making Russia more free and less belligerent.
Hezbollah chief threatens Israel with open war. The only way to have peace in the Middle East is to wipe out Hezbollah and Hamas. Fatah and Lebanon would be wise to team up in some fashion with Israel to clean out their own houses. If they don't do it, Israel will have to, and the humanitarian crisis will be worse. But there will be no peace in the Middle East until somebody wipes out those terrorist organizations.
Iranian President Ahmadinejad to visit Iraq.
Al Qaeda in Iraq has been degraded so far as to be almost powerless, so its threat against Israel isn't very credible.
Americans are up in arms because Musharraf doesn't respect western views of human rights. Naturally, we think we rule the world, and all must bow down before our views. Another example: Saudi Arabia to execute woman for witchcraft. It wasn't too many centuries ago that Americans did that. It takes time to evolve equal rights. It took the US about a century and a half to recognize women's right to vote. We should work to help establish them around the world, but if try to hold everybody to our standard, we're doomed to fail.
I can understand putting a device on a car of a convicted drunk driver that insures the driver is not drunk. I would hate it, but I can understand it. I think such a penalty should only be used on a repeat offender who was well above the legal limit multiple times.
Condominium bans smoking inside private condos. Yet another attack on private property rights.
Guns are even safe in spacecraft, but don't tell liberals that.
Fed Chairman Bernanke warns of weakening US economy. This will hurt Republicans in Nov. After 5 record years, our trade deficit finally falls.
Reason predicts our Middle East policy will change little under a new president.
Clinton and Obama spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on personal pet projects - earmarks. McCain spends 0 dollars on earmarks.
Educated young people are flying Ohio in droves. That leaves less educated and old people in Ohio. That's good news for Hillary and bad news for Ohio.
If you chose to get pregnant and not get married, you better not teach at a Catholic School. Why would anybody be surprised this woman was asked to resign?
Pentagon to shoot down failing satellite. We're turning a negative into a positive by testing our ability to shoot down a satellite, but for legitimate reasons.
Circumcision helps hygiene, so it naturally helps limit the spread of STDs.
Star Wars: Clone Wars fully animated.
Cato explains that Obama's rhetoric is JFK, but his policies are just the opposite - the destructive liberalism of Teddy Kennedy. Cato doesn't pull any punches in this one. Another Cato essay explains that Obama's plan to raise taxes to save social security will lead to more problems.
Cato explains that borrowing money, giving it to taxpayers, then saddling taxpayers with that debt and interest on that debt is not only bad policy, but it's immoral. That's one of the reasons it is bad policy. Freedom is moral. Government force is not. People keeping their own money and spending as they see fit because taxes are low and government is severely limited in power - that's moral and good policy.
Arlen Specter investigates Roger Goodell over Patriots spy-gate. In a tangled web of congressional deceit, it turns out that Specter's top 2 donors are Comcast a law firm that lobbies for Comcast. Comcast is in a fight with the NFL over whether to make the NFL network a free channel or not. This is how Congress spends our tax dollars. Government of the lobbyists, but he politicians, for the corporations. The solution is to dramatically reduce the size and scope of government and evict the Republican and Democrat aristocracy and replace them with citizen-representatives.
