The german (BRD) national health program proves you wrong. Germans eat better and more healthfully than US-Americans, and they have a single payer, national health care system. Ditto France, ditto Israel. All american allies, to note.
You're pointing out a cultural issue of diverse populations, and it doesn't affect my point. No doubt Germans, Israelis and whomever else you mention eat less healthy than they would if they paid for their own health care, as do Americans.
