Setting up a Federal bailout agency to bail out irresponsible state and local governments takes statism to a whole new level.
Obama gives $7 billion of taxpayer money to the UAW in Chyrsler bankruptcy.
Obama wants to continue the D.C. voucher program for existing voucher holders until they graduate. He's hoping that the people who suffer in government schools won't know any better. This is actually the smartest move Obama could make since Democrats aligned to kill the program. The press would be all over those students who lost vouchers, documenting how much worse their education is because of it. It would have been ongoing news all next year at least, undermining his presidency. Obama's staff isn't dumb. They know how to maximize harm to the American people while limiting damage to themselves.
The government is supposedly finally going to kick freeloaders out of the housing taxpayers provided after hurricane Katrina. I'm not holding my breath.
I'm not a fan of George Will, but in this rare essay which shows some spine and makes me want to stand up and applaud, Will compares the Obama administration, specifically his policy toward the automakers, to the Academy of Lagado from Gulliver's travels. Perfect. Fascism is government planning of production. Socialism is government owning the means of production. Syndicalism is trade unions owning the means of production. Obama combines all three in his tyrannical automobile bailout plan. Along the way, Will highlights the biggest danger of government bailing out banks:
But the banks are compliant because they are mendicants: Having taken the government's money, they are the government's minions. And this quote from Obama shows us his dictatorial ambitions:
When the president was recently asked what had "humbled" him in office, he mentioned that "there are a lot of different power centers" in America, so, for example, "I can't just press a button and suddenly have the bankers do exactly what I want."Poor wannabe dictator. I'm sure FDR felt the exact same way.
I don't need a pundit to tell me Obama's automaker plan is a huge power grab for both government and unions, and I would hope anybody who wasn't an indoctrinated liberal would know it too.
Under the Obama administration's proposal, Chrysler would, in essence, be given to Fiat, an Italian company, to operate.
So, how is an Italian car manufacturer operating in Michigan any more "American" than a Japanese manufacturer operating in Kentucky?
And why should the federal government give a market preference - through taxpayer financing and warrantee guarantees - to Italian cars produced by American workers in Michigan over Japanese cars produced by American workers in Kentucky?
Rhetorical questions.
Obama unveils the same $3.55 trillion budget he unveiled a month or two ago.
