Free kibbles

Bush to unveil mortgage freeze. This is another form of welfare for corporations and individuals, and it will have devastating consequences down the line. What this bailout means is that people who buy houses they can't afford and buy loans they can't afford don't have to worry about the consequences. Lenders who sell loans to people who can't afford to pay them, don't have to worry about the consequences. Anybody who bought a house they could afford with a loan they could afford is a fool, and will know better next time. Any company that failed to make sub-prime loans is a fool, and will know better next time. All this does is encourage irresponsible lending, and once the government bailout starts, you can't ever undo it. This is another fabulous example of government undermining personal responsibility to the detriment of everybody.

Thanks to McCain-Feingold, free speech group asks permission to speak.

Man who covered truck in abortion images won't be charged. Why was charging him even considered? Everybody knows that free speech means what it says. Except McCain, Feingold, Congress, the President, and the Supreme Court.

Democrats are still looking for a way to defeat our troops in Iraq without having to take responsibility for it. Now they're trying to tie funding for our troops to milestones for the Iraqi government. So if the Iraqi government doesn't meet a milestone, Democrats will cut off supplies and funding for our troops fighting the war. How does cutting off supplies for our troops for the failings of the Iraqi government make sense? Congress can tie money to the Iraqi government to milestones for the Iraqi government, but endangering our troops based on the performance of the Iraqi government is the lowest they've gone so far.

OPEC keeps oil output unchanged. I think the drop in oil prices is based on the last OPEC meeting when they announced they wouldn't change output. A lot of the speculation dropped out of the price.

Car bomb explodes in Baghdad, killing 14. We haven't defeated al Qaeda in Iraq yet.

US encourages African peacekeepers into Somalia.

Reason injects some reason into the Chinese toy manufacturer controversy.

Reason explains that ethanol is not commercially viable.

Legal immigrants recognize the threat from illegal immigrants and are increasingly supporting Republicans, because despite Republicans terrible record on illegal immigration, Democrats, as usual, are even worse.

Kucinich faces 2 primary challenges for congressional seat.

Romney fires landscapers for using illegal aliens on his property a second time. This is going to hurt him because he didn't fire them the first time.

Fred Thompson says that government shouldn't tell you what to eat. I think it's too little, too late for Thompson. He squandered his opportunity.

Huckabee takes over Republican lead. He's another authoritarian just like all the rest, but at least he supports the FairTax.

Cato thinks the Supreme Court should overturn the habeas corpus removal provisions blocking Guantanamo prisoners from filing the petition. If this happens, activist judges who want to tear down America will certainly rule in favor of the prisoners. What Cato doesn't say is whether they think all prisoners of war should be able to file habeas corpus. Did we allow all German and Japanese prisoners in WWII to file habeas corpus? The Germans and Japanese wore uniforms and therefore earned the protection of the Geneva Convention, which the Guantanamo prisoners do not have. I don't think those enemy combatants have any rights because they chose not to wear a uniform.

Several Cato scholars welcome the new, freer trade agreement with Peru, but all fear more protectionism in the future.

Breaking down the 47 million so-called uninsured Americans shows that only 8 million or so Americans are uninsured because they can't afford it or get coverage from an existing government program.

Canadian judge rules America is no longer safe for refuges. A karmic response would be for refugees to flood Canada instead of the US.
