Charles Krauthammer suggests that the Congress pass border security first, then take up other aspects of immigration legislation. Unfortunately, adding security to the border won't stop the invasion. A river hasn't stopped them, and neither will a fence. The illegal immigrants have too much financial incentive to be stopped by fences, guards, or the military. To secure the border, we have to make the jobs go away, and to do that we have to credibly threaten to arrest all employers of illegal aliens. We can do that under existing law, so let's enforce existing law first, before we pass any other immigration provision.

How do you secure the Mexican border?

Conservatives keep saying "secure the border" as if it's some easy process. It's not. In fact, it's probably impossible. All the conservatives' proposed plans are ridiculously expensive, big-government programs that are doomed to failure.

Rich Lowry wrote: "This is why a rational approach to immigration must start with enforcement."

If enforcement was so easy, we would have already done it. Unfortunately, as long as Latin Americans have a gigantic economic incentive to come to America, making more in an hour here than they can make at home in a week, there is no enforcement that will work.

We're not trying to stop animals from coming to America. Those people are just as smart as we are, extremely motivated, and they'll find ways around any border security we apply. The cost to enter may rise, but with that kind of economic bonus for illegally coming to America, that will hardly slow them down. I don't care if you put the 82nd Airborne on the border, illegal immigrants will find a way in to gain that huge economic advantage. We haven't been able to secure the smaller Iraqi border with Iran, and they're using the 82nd Airborne.

No. The only reasonable solution to stopping illegal immigration is to get rid of that economic incentive. By and large, American employers know their illegal employees, or can certainly find out. Once employers face arrest for hiring illegals, illegal aliens will have no jobs, and the economic incentive for illegal aliens to break into America will go away. The illegal aliens already here will go home. We'll catch, arrest, and deport the hard core cases who stay.

Once the human flood is reduced to a trickle by removing the economic incentive for breaking into our country, existing border agents will be able to effectively secure our border. There is no need for any big-government fence, military, National Guard, mass deportations or anything else.

This is the only good way to solve this problem. Let's stop the hand-wringing, the fantasizing, and the bull****. Enforce our existing laws and solve this problem.

I was tempted to start this column off with a couple of jokes about doing extensive research this weekend at strip clubs. Unfortunately the humor escaped me because losing freedom, a common event in the US, is no laughing matter. Everyday, somewhere in this country, citizens surrender freedom and responsibility for themselves to the government. It's a disease that is destroying America from the inside. This new stripper bill, which will become law in several days, illustrates that Americans no longer care about that most precious of human values, the value that made America the greatest country in history, freedom.

The most effective strategy the 2 parties use to continue to take power from us for themselves is divide and conquer. The left will demonize the right over this bill in attempt to win votes for Democrats even though the left is complicit and the left's assault on freedom is just as dangerous as the assault from the right.

Liberals are already complaining about conservatives passing this bill. That's a self-serving mischaracterization. This bill was passed with bipartisan support in the legislature. Most Republicans and half of Democrats voted for the bill. Governor Ted Strickland, a Democrat, will allow the bill to become law at least partly because the bipartisan support could override his veto.

Liberals will claim that this bill was forced on us by a small, vocal minority of busybodies who want to tell everybody else how to live, and there's some truth to that, but it's not the whole story. The Cincinnati based organization, Citizens for Community Values (CCV), did instigate the law. I doubt the members of this organization spend a lot of time in strip clubs, except for the hypocrites, so in that respect, a small, special interest group is trying to use the power of the state to control the behavior of others.

But a recent poll suggests that 60% of Ohioans support the restrictions. This is further evidence that the greatest danger to our freedom comes from our neighbors and ourselves. The Nazis couldn't take our freedom. The Soviets couldn't take our freedom. But our neighbors can, with the eager assistance of both Republicans and Democrats. They take our freedom very effectively, one un-American law at a time.

Because of popular support for the law, representatives from both parties support it, and it's veto-proof. We have the government we deserve. It honestly reflects our values, and that's the root of our problem. From the big-government Department of Education transforming our schools from institutions of education into liberal indoctrination centers to busybodies all over Ohio telling business owners that they can't allow smoking on their own property to 60% of Ohioans supporting restrictions on strippers, we surrender freedom after freedom and give up our power of self-determination.

Puritans left England to avoid persecution, but in modern America, puritans join the persecutors. This bill is not about fighting crime, as CCV would have us believe. This bill is about shutting down strip clubs and other adult businesses and putting people out of work. It's about punishing workers in the adult entertainment industry. CCV can't spank the strippers (I bet some wish they could) and their costumers, so they're using the power of the government to punish them. This bill is about power.

America was founded as a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy, specifically so that the majority couldn't whimsically, punitively or for any other reason use government to exercise power over the minority. A tyranny of the majority is still a tyranny, and it doesn't matter if 99% of Ohioans supported the stripper law, it should never become law. We enumerate government's powers, regulating strippers isn't one of them, and all other powers are reserved to the people. It's the responsibility of our representatives to defend the Constitution and protect the minorities from the majority, but that's another value that America has cast aside in the name of power.

Both Republicans and Democrats long ago abdicated their responsibility for good government, and we live with the deteriorating consequences every day. We complain that the Iraqi government is too factionalized to govern effectively, but that's exactly what we've allowed to happen in the US. When we chose to surrender our power, freedom, and responsibility for our own lives to government, we removed all checks on the 2 parties. We no longer even pay lip service to wanting good government. We don't vote for good government. We vote against the candidate in the other party, because he's even worse than the candidate from our party. Republicans and Democrats have divided us, and now they're conquering us.

In order to get back control of our government, we have to rediscover love for freedom and self-reliance. We can remake our government, but we have to accept responsibility for ourselves and our government first, not vice-versa. Then we have to take our power back by voting for good, limited government instead of voting for the slightly lesser of the evils of the 2 parties. We have to remember that personal freedom and personal responsibility, the twin values that made America great, are family values.

If you don't like strip clubs, teach that to your children. Convince your friends. Preach at your church. But don't empower government to take freedom from all of us.

American employers can stop illegal immigration

Steve Chapman claims that America can't realistically stop illegal immigration. Once again a conservative expresses the opinion that only government can solve problems, and since government can't solve the illegal immigration problem, the problem is unsolvable. This is a crock, because its fundamental assumption is wrong - that the only possible solution to verify immigration status is dependent on government.

Hardliners think the way to get rid of illegal immigrants is to get rid of the jobs they fill. In the Senate bill endorsed by President Bush, advocates of tougher enforcement got a new system for employers to verify that their workers are entitled to be here. Anyone newly hired (and, in time, anyone with a job) would have to pass a check of federal databases.

It's a fine idea in theory, but note that it requires government authorization for every employment decision in a large, dynamic economy, an approach that is just slightly at odds with the free market. It also presumes a level of efficiency that conservatives do not usually expect of government.

It's a terrible idea in theory and would be worse in practice. This is how big-government conservatives and big-government liberals destroy America. Both liberals and conservatives mistake America for the federal government. America was made great by its people, not the government, and the American people can solve this problem. The federal government can't stop illegal immigration, but the American people can.

American employers are more than capable of effectively identifying the citizenship of their prospective employees. We don't need any special ID card. We don't need any big-government plan. All we need to do is provide employers and incentive to verify citizenship of their employees, and that incentive is already built into existing law - send employers who don't verify citizenship to jail.

Mr. Chapman is right that free market forces drive American employers to hire illegal aliens at lower wages than Americans will take for the same work. In the absence of any penalty for hiring illegal aliens, we can't stop the southern invasion. No fence will stop it. Militarization of the border won't stop it.

But when employers are faced with the prospect of going to jail, as proscribed by law, for hiring illegal aliens, they will stop hiring them. They will review the IDs and citizenship of their employees and they will thoroughly check the citizenship documents of prospective employees. Currently employed illegal immigrants will lose their jobs, and they will be unable to find new jobs. With no market incentive for being in America, illegal immigrants will go home and work to build the economies of their own countries and Americans and legal immigrants will take the open jobs at fair market wages.

There will still be a problem with counterfeit documents, but the vast majority of illegal immigrants don't buy counterfeit documents. They don't need to because our government refuses to enforce the law against employers. Our government wants illegal aliens to provide labor at sub-market prices.

The government is the problem. The people are the solution. All we need to do is enforce existing laws. By having employers take the jobs for illegal aliens off the market, the illegal alien invasion will be reduced to a manageable amount for existing authorities to handle. Hard-core illegal aliens who won't leave will be caught and deported. Counterfeiters, having a greatly reduced market and comparably reduced funds, will be arrested and convicted.

John Podhoretz claims all Bush's troubles stem from Iraq. There's some truth in this, but it doesn't address the outrageous spending on social programs, entitlements, and the anti-American immigration fraud. Bush is just a terrible President.
