War

Al Qaeda group from Mali reportedly holding 41 hostages, three Americans, in Algeria. All this wars and all these deaths, and terrorism is worse than ever because of it. The terrorists claim to hold seven Americans.

Soldiers believe they have improved the lives of people in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have to, or they'd probably go insane. But the reality life in those countries is worse than it was before US troops entered. And that doesn't count all the people killed, maimed and wounded. You can't bomb countries into prosperity.
"Iraq and Afghanistan were invaded and occupied by U.S. troops who killed hundreds of thousands and died by the thousands to install militant Islamist governments with new constitutions that formally enshrine Sharia Law."
This another example of the decivilizing effect of government.
