Sensible plan to search for life on Mars.
"To find life on Mars, some scientists believe you might want to look underground for microbes that may be hiding from the harsh radiation that bathes the red planet’s surface. Various NASA rovers have scraped away a few inches at a time, but the real paydirt may lie a meter or two below the surface. It's being crowd-sourced. NASA hates this project and wouldn't do anything like it for several reasons. First, it's not expensive enough. They only take on projects that enrich their armies of scientists and engineers. This project doesn't require much engineering, and it's being funded through kickstarter. Second, the results will be definitive. NASA doesn't want to find life on Mars. They want to continually produce press releases that help them fund more billion dollar projects, not actually find life. This is the same reason government bureaucrats don't want to cure cancer. Worse, the results will almost certainly be negative, undermining NASA propaganda. When you realize NASA is just a big, socialist jobs program, this all makes sense. This is why science and exploration should be funded by the private sector.
That’s too deep for existing instruments, so a team of space enthusiasts has launched a more ambitious idea: dropping arrow-like probes from the Martian atmosphere to pierce the soil like bunker-busting bug catchers."
