How in the world could this Chicago school guy consider this lassez faire?

"The political program of the original Chicagoans is best revealed in the egregious work of a founder and major political mentor: Henry C. Simons’s A Positive Program for Laissez Faire.¹ Simons’s political program was laissez faireist only in an unconsciously satiric sense.

It consisted of three key ideas:

1. 
   

   a drastic policy of trust-busting of all business firms and unions down to small blacksmith-shop size, in order to arrive at "perfect" competition and what Simons conceived to be the "free market";

2. 
   

   a vast scheme of compulsory egalitarianism, equalizing incomes through the income-tax structure; and

3. 
   

   a proto-Keynesian policy of stabilizing the price-level through expansionary fiscal and monetary programs during a recession.

Extreme trust-busting, egalitarianism, and Keynesianism: the Chicago School contained within itself much of the New Deal program, and, hence, its status within the economics profession of the early 1930s as a leftish fringe. And while Friedman has modified and softened Simons’s hard-nosed stance, he is still, in essence, Simons redivivus; he only appears to be a free-marketeer because the remainder of the profession has shifted radically leftward and stateward in the meanwhile."

Friedman was a wonderful speaker about freedom, but anybody who supports centrally planned money supply is not a lover a freedom.

Phillip K. Dick explains how perception colors our interpretation of the world.

"My first story had to do with a dog who imagined that the garbagemen who came every Friday morning were stealing valuable food which the family had carefully stored away in a safe metal container. Every day, members of the family carried out paper sacks of nice ripe food, stuffed them into the metal container, shut the lid tightly—and when the container was full, these dreadful-looking creatures came and stole everything but the can."

It seems perfectly reasonable from a dog's point of view, except for one thing: why would the people keep doing it?

"Sometimes when I watch my eleven-year-old daughter watch TV, I wonder what she is being taught. The problem of miscuing; consider that. A TV program produced for adults is viewed by a small child. Half of what is said and done in the TV drama is probably misunderstood by the child. Maybe it's all misunderstood. And the thing is, Just how authentic is the information anyhow, even if the child correctly understood it? What is the relationship between the average TV situation comedy to reality? What about the cop shows? Cars are continually swerving out of control, crashing, and catching fire. The police are always good and they always win. Do not ignore that point: The police always win. What a lesson that is. You should not fight authority, and even if you do, you will lose. The message here is, Be passive. And—cooperate. If Officer Baretta asks you for information, give it to him, because Officer Beratta is a good man and to be trusted. He loves you, and you should love him."

I often wonder what would happen if somebody created a show and all the cops were corrupt, the prosecutor was corrupt, the judge was corrupt, etc. I think people would have violent reactions to it, and not just government agents. Hill Street Blues was the most realistic in that regard that I can remember. Other than Farillo, the cops were not paragons of virtue, and even he was put in the bad position of protecting some of his guys who had made mistakes. But even in HSB, nobody was outright corrupt.

"Do not believe—and I am dead serious when I say this—do not assume that order and stability are always good, in a society or in a universe. The old, the ossified, must always give way to new life and the birth of new things. Before the new things can be born the old must perish. This is a dangerous realization, because it tells us that we must eventually part with much of what is familiar to us. And that hurts. But that is part of the script of life. Unless we can psychologically accommodate change, we ourselves begin to die, inwardly. The is why the welfare state is so deadly. It resists change. Think of Bush and Obama robbing the American people to keep dying companies alive - preventing progress. Like I often say, static, status quo and statism are all related. Without change, societies die. That's why the birth rates in Europe and Japan are unsustainable. The same will happen here if we stay on the same path of ever more government domination of our lives.

"The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words. George Orwell made this clear in his novel 1984. But another way to control the minds of people is to control their perceptions. If you can get them to see the world as you do, they will think as you do. Comprehension follows perception. How do you get them to see the reality you see? After all, it is only one reality out of many. Images are a basic constituent: pictures. This is why the power of TV to influence young minds is so staggeringly vast. Words and pictures are synchronized. The possibility of total control of the viewer exists, especially the young viewer. TV viewing is a kind of sleep-learning. An EEG of a person watching TV shows that after about half an hour the brain decides that nothing is happening, and it goes into a hypnoidal twilight state, emitting alpha waves. This is because there is such little eye motion. In addition, much of the information is graphic and therefore passes into the right hemisphere of the brain, rather than being processed by the left, where the conscious personality is located. Recent experiments indicate that much of what we see on the TV screen is received on a subliminal basis. We only imagine that we consciously see what is there. The bulk of the messages elude our attention; literally, after a few hours of TV watching, we do not know what we have seen. Our memories are spurious, like our memories of dreams; the blank are filled in retrospectively. And falsified. We have participated unknowingly in the creation of a spurious reality, and then we have obligingly fed it to ourselves. We have colluded in our own doom."

That's interesting. This is an amazing lecture, and it shows how Dick's fanatical Christianity colored his world at the time.

TAX AND SPEND:

Amity Shlaes compares Obama's policies to FDRs and discovers Obama is repeating the mistakes of the Great Depression. It's unclear if FDR was trying to harm America on purpose, but we have the luxury of hindsight to realize what the consequences of those policies are - they're sending us deeper into depression. Obama knows this. He's doing it to us on purpose.

The death tax incentivizes people to die instead of fighting to live and potentially costing their children millions of dollars.

"The math is ugly: On a $5 million estate, the tax consequence of dying a minute after midnight on Jan. 1, 2011 rather than two minutes earlier could be more than $2 million; on a $15 million estate, the difference could be about $8 million."

The health costs of staying alive also cost children twice as much when the government steals half the money of people who die. I don't agree that this is an accident. Democrats know exactly what they're doing. They just don't care.

FEDERAL RESERVE:

When the US dollar was the world's reserve currency, the Fed could inflate at will, but because foreign banks soaked up the newly printed dollars, price inflation didn't hit the US hard. But now that banks are getting rid of the dollars, that's not true any more. If our economy ever experiences a recovery, which probably won't be anytime soon, we're going to see significant price inflation. I already see price inflation all around Dayton, and it's going to get worse.

GLOBAL WARMING:

Even the local paper has recognized that private practice doctors are being squeezed out of business and into the government protected monopolies of the socialist hospital system. This companion article which tries to explain how this is a good thing provides a lot more information than usual for the press - probably more information that the statists wish was out there. Not only does it explain how Obamacare is driving private practice doctors to shut down and become part of the government system, it also tells us this:

This is socialized medicine through the back door.

How the American people empower conspiracies to dominate us.

"Any attempt to expose a conspiracy on the assumption that once there is a successful exposé, the American public will throw out the conspirators, is naïve. Even if we were successful in exposing conspiracies in this way, the public would not change the system. The best that we could hope for would be to get a new set of conspirators running the show.

The problem is not the conspiracies; the problem is the corruption in the hearts of the people. The fact that the voters would allow and even promote the creation of the modern welfare state is indicative of the fact that larceny is in their hearts. It does no good to replace one conspiracy with another conspiracy if you leave the system intact that enables the conspiracies to gain power.

This goes back to the famous chapter 10 in F. A. Hayek's book, The Road to Serfdom. The chapter is titled, "Why the Worst Get on Top." Hayek argued that the modern socialist state, meaning the modern welfare state, encourages the worst people to get on top, because the worst people are the most successful in seeking and maintaining power.

Because central economic planning centralizes power, it grants to the state the right to confiscate the wealth of the public. We should not expect kindly people to be successful in the pursuit of power within such a system. We will find, and what we have found, is that the most ruthless people seek out the levers of power, precisely because the levers of power enable them to achieve their goal: control over other people."

Think about it. Do evil people prefer to work in the private economy where they have to work hard to provide a valuable good or service that improves the lives of their fellow men in order to gain themselves, or do they prefer the political economy where they can use the government's gun to loot the people and force their will on others without working hard? The answer is obvious. Government attracts the most evil people, and the worst of the worst, the ones who are best at lying without conscience, controlling others through threats of violence, and looting them at gunpoint for personal gain and the advantage of their cronies, rise to the top. Of course some good people go into politics, but the system either chews them up and spits them out or corrupts them over time.

"When the Tea Party movement comes out foursquare against Social Security and Medicare, I will begin to take it seriously. I do not expect this."

McChrystal Fails Intelligence Test

McChrystal Fails Intelligence Test

They say that truth is the first casualty of war. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, General Stanley McChrystal committed the cardinal sin of telling some truth - he has no respect for President Obama's civilian war planners and diplomats. McChrystal and his staff openly ridiculed Vice President Biden, Special Representative Holbrooke, National Security Advisor Jones and Ambassador Eikenberry. Disagreeing in private is one thing, but publicly ridiculing civilian leadership is another. In America, policy decisions are made by civilians, not the military, but by publicly ridiculing the civilian leadership, McChrystal injected himself into policy.

McChrystal has a pattern of this. Last summer, soon after President Obama put him in command of the Afghan-Pakistan war, McChrystal leaked an urgent request for 40,000 more troops, claiming if he didn't get them, we would lose the war. This was a blatant attempt to force Obama's hand that mostly worked. After three months, Obama promised 30,000 more troops for an Afghanistan surge, but the three month delay highlighted the friction between the president and the general.

Last fall McChrystal ridiculed Biden in a speech in Great Britain while Obama was on his way to the Olympic Committee. Obama summoned McChrysal to Air Force One to remind him of his duty. Apparently McChrystal didn't learn the lesson.

And given his history, why would we expect him to? According to Rolling Stone, West Point operated more like Animal House than the paragon of discipline Americans are led to believe while McChrystal attended. ""Prison on the Hudson," as it was known then, was a potent mix of testosterone, hooliganism and reactionary patriotism. Cadets repeatedly trashed the mess hall in food fights, and birthdays were celebrated with a tradition called "rat f******," which often left the birthday boy outside in the snow or mud, covered in shaving cream. "It was pretty out of control," says Lt. Gen. David Barno, a classmate who went on to serve as the top commander in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005. McChrystal was reportedly the brilliant leader of the delinquents known more for their alcohol tolerance than military strategy. Bluto would be proud. Punishment didn't change his behavior then, and being dressed down by the president last fall didn't change it either.

Disdain for authority in a job that won't tolerate it isn't McChrystal's only character flaw. In 2004 McChrystal was involved in the cover-up of the cause of death of ex-NFL linebacker turned Ranger Pat Tillman. Tillman was killed by friendly fire in a firefight in Afghanistan, but McChrystal helped cover it up for over a year. He wrote a note recommending that President Bush never say how Tillman was killed because it could cause "public embarrassment" for the president. In 2006, the prison camp McChrystal was in charge of in Iraq was implicated in a prisoner abuse scandal, but McChrystal walked away scot-free.

That McChrystal rose to command all forces in Afghanistan instead of being court-martialed shows how corrupting our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are. McChrystal moved up the ranks in spite of his actions because he killed lots of bad guys. As head of Joint Special Operations Command in Iraq, his team hunted down, killed and captured the most dangerous insurgents in Iraq including Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

A bigger truth exposed in the Rolling Stone article is we're not winning the war in Afghanistan. This surge in Afghanistan is modeled after General Petraeus's surge in Iraq, but Afghanistan isn't Iraq. The Iraqi people have a national identity that doesn't exist in Afghanistan. Iraqis in general are better educated, and many served in Hussein's military. Iraqis are used to a central government. Afghans are not. Insurgents in Iraq were foreign fighters. The Taliban are local. Afghanistan is more rugged.

Not only that, but President Karzai is an ultra-corrupt warlord. His brother is a major warlord and opium trader in Taliban controlled Kandahar. Karzai won re-election through election fraud. He's threatened to join the Taliban. Karzai is no supporter of women's rights. For all intents and purposes, US policy makers are using US troops to fight a gang war on behalf of Karzai. On top of that, according to the Washington Post, "The U.S. military is funding a massive protection racket in Afghanistan, indirectly paying tens of millions of dollars to warlords, corrupt public officials and the Taliban to ensure safe passage of its supply convoys throughout the country, according to congressional investigators." As a result, US troops are unable to secure Marjah. The campaign to take Kandahar has been delayed. American central planners cannot centrally plan the US. How can they centrally plan Afghanistan?

The war has become so unpopular that the US propaganda machine recently felt compelled to report that Afghanistan has $900 billion in mineral wealth that just happens to be in Taliban controlled territory. Gosh, we have to keep fighting now, right? This isn't new information - it's why the Russians invaded - but it's a stark reminder US troops aren't in Afghanistan to fight al Qaeda. There are fewer than 100 al Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan. Our government wants the loot.

Even worse, Rolling Stone makes it clear that McChrystal doesn't have control of his command. His strategy is not clear to the commanders and troops implementing it. The rules of engagement force US troops to sacrifice their lives for the sake of Afghan lives. This has sparked a near mutiny. One platoon's orders read, "Patrol only in areas that you are reasonably certain that you will not have to defend yourselves with lethal force." McChrystal seems to have fallen victim to the Peter Principle - rising to his level of incompetence.

But the biggest truth exposed by Rolling Stone is this war is unwinnable. Obama had to fire McChrystal to hide that truth.

Because BP has worked night and day, tapping the best people in the business, attempting new methods, discarding those that don't work and innovating, it has a plan that may control all the oil leaking from the well in a few days. If it works, that will be impressive. If government was in charge of cleaning this thing up, they'd still be having meetings about who was going to be in charge and how the politicians were going to take all the credit and not one attempt would have been made to stop the leak by now. What's really sad is the marxist-environmentalists are rooting against BP and rooting for more damage.

POLICE STATE:

After a jury convicted a policeman of involuntary manslaughter for shooting an unarmed man to death, people in Oakland riot. Why?

WAR:

Military spending is dividing the tea party exemplified by the positions of Palin and Paul.

POLITICS:

Democrats have read the writing on the wall so Pelosi and Reid are preparing a destructive lame duck session after Democrats get trashed in November. On the agenda are new taxes, card check, federally mandated universal voter registration, and porkapalooza.

"Conservative groups such as FreedomWorks are alarmed at the potential damage, and they are demanding that everyone in Congress pledge not to take up substantive legislation in a post-election session. "Members of Congress are supposed to represent their constituents, not override them like sore losers in a lame-duck session," Rep. Tom Price, head of the Republican Study Committee, told me."

Republicans would be smart to force Democrats to vote on a resolution against lame duck legislation. We would be smarter to block Congress from being in session after the election. We'd be even smarter to limit them to about 30 days beginning in January each year.

"It's been almost 30 years since anything remotely contentious was handled in a lame-duck session, but that doesn't faze Democrats who have jammed through ObamaCare and are determined to bring the financial system under greater federal control."

Like that matters to Pelosi, Reid or Obama.

"Mike Allen of Politico.com reports one reason President Obama failed to mention climate change legislation during his recent, Oval Office speech on the Gulf oil spill was that he wants to pass a modest energy bill this summer, then add carbon taxes or regulations in a conference committee with the House, most likely during a lame-duck session. The result would be a climate bill vastly more ambitious, and costly for American consumers and taxpayers, than moderate "Blue Dogs" in the House would support on the campaign trail. "We have a lot of wiggle room in conference," a House Democratic aide told the trade publication Environment & Energy Daily last month."

Obama is an evil monster. He won't be satisfied until he turns the military loose on the American people like Lincoln, kills millions and enslaves us all.

Let's hope Obama campaigning for Reid is the kiss of death it's been for everybody else he's campaigned for.

"The really, really, really simplified version is that Hollywood sets up a separate corporation for each movie with the intent that this corporation will take on losses. The studio then charges the "film corporation" a huge fee (which creates a large part of the "expense" that leads to the loss). The end result is that the studio still rakes in the cash, but for accounting purposes the film is a money "loser" -- which matters quite a bit for anyone who is supposed to get a cut of any profits."

Always get a share of the gross, not the profits.

The ugly truth about eminent domain:

"The phrase "eminent domain" reflects an assumption Karl Marx would find congenial: government is the default owner of everything, and that private ownership, however extensive, is merely a contingent arrangement."

We don't own property. The government gives us permission for the illusion of ownership. That's a load of crap.

"The familiar civics class platitude describes this provision as necessary for the construction of bridges, hospitals, and other amenities that are supposedly "public goods" only government can provide. The inescapable reality is that eminent domain is a particularly vulgar form of plunder used to enrich the political class and their corporate cronies at the expense of the rest of us."

No kidding. It keeps government, politicians and their cronies from having to pay the asking price for property like everybody else has to.

How government breeds contempt that becomes its downfall. The bigger, more aggressive a government becomes, the more contempt it breeds.

The nasty reaction by Cleveland's owner and fans make LeBron James look classy and sympathetic by comparison. What a bunch of idiots. LeBron has every right to pursue his dream wherever he wants. Cleveland doesn't own him. More power to him. Great observation about the situation:

You have no idea how much I wish all this stuff was just a bad dream.

Obama's Medicare chief wants to use government run health care to redistribute wealth. That's why Obama picked him and appointed him before the Senate could even interview him.

While all central plans implemented by force are bad, some are less bad than others. Britain is returning primary decision making about patients to their doctors.

"About £80billion will be distributed to family GPs in a move that will see strategic health authorities and primary care trusts scrapped.

The plan, contained in a white paper to be published next week, is designed to place key decisions about how patients are cared for in the hands of doctors who know them. Tens of thousands of administrative jobs in the health service will be lost as a result."

How common sense is that? What cracks me up is that central planners had to come to that decision, and there will lots of critics. This just goes to show how badly central planners had previously screwed things up.

Of course they are. People who enjoy using violence to force their will on others as Obama's domestic policy clearly shows he does don't allow borders to stop them from using violence to project their will on others. The more oppressive the domestic policy, the more aggressive the foreign policy. Both are a reflection of the desire to use violence to control others.

I wasn't aware of the Marxist theme to Obama's strategy. I should have expected that.

Ann Coulter blasts the Afghan war and Bill Krystol and stands up for Michael Steele. Like I said, Obama is dividing Republicans as well as Democrats. This might be his strategy for winning in 2012.

FOREIGN POLICY:

US foreign policy should be like Switzerland's. They've enjoyed 500 years of peace.

I wasn't aware that Obama had put restrictions on news organizations regarding the Gulf oil spill, but I'm not surprised.

News photographers and reporters are no longer allowed to come within 65 feet of any response vessel or booms on the water or on beaches. As CNN's Anderson Cooper reported on his Thursday evening broadcast, "[I]n order to get closer, you have to get direct permission from the Coast Guard captain of the Port of New Orleans. Dayton central planners look at Pittsburgh as a model for Dayton. This is a mistake. Pittsburgh isn't Dayton, and Ohio isn't Pennsylvania so there's no reason to expect the same central plan will work here. What will work here and everywhere is getting rid of the central plans and freeing the people to keep their own money and spend it on what's valuable to them instead of seizing their money at gunpoint and spending it on what's valuable to the robbers. What this really shows is the central planners figured out a plan - take out the river damns and open the river for recreations - then they found a city that did the same thing to justify their plan. And don't get me wrong, I'm all for undoing the damage they did in the past by blocking citizens from using the river, but this is not Dayton's biggest problem. Spending and the taxes that fund it are the problem.

Using schools to create a caste system.

"We live in a time of great school crisis. Our children rank at the bottom of nineteen industrial nations in reading, writing and arithmetic. At the very bottom. The world's narcotic economy is based upon our own consumption of the commodity, if we didn't buy so many powdered dreams the business would collapse – and schools are an important sales outlet. Our teenage suicide rate is the highest in the world and suicidal kids are rich kids for the most part, not the poor. In Manhattan fifty per cent of all new marriages last less than five years. So something is wrong for sure.

Our school crisis is a reflection of this greater social crisis. We seem to have lost our identity. Children and old people are penned up and locked away from the business of the world to a degree without precedent – nobody talks to them anymore and without children and old people mixing in daily life a community has no future and no past, only a continuous present. In fact, the name "community" hardly applies to the way we interact with each other. We live in networks, not communities, and everyone I know is lonely because of that. In some strange way school is a major actor in this tragedy just as it is a major actor in the widening guilt among social classes. Using school as a sorting mechanism we appear to be on the way to creating a caste system, complete with untouchables who wander through subway trains begging and sleep on the streets."

Schools do divide and lock students into castes. The very idea that children should be divided by age and further subdivided into castes instead of integrated so that the younger and less knowledgeable can learn from the older and more knowledgeable is nuts.

"I've noticed a fascinating phenomenon in my twenty-five years of teaching – that schools and schooling are increasingly irrelevant to the great enterprises of the planet. No one believes anymore that scientists are trained in science classes or politicians in civics classes or poets in English classes. The truth is that schools don't really teach anything except how to obey orders. This is a great mystery to me because thousands of humane, caring people work in schools as teachers and aides and administrators but the abstract logic of the institution overwhelms their individual contributions. Although teachers do care and do work very hard, the institution is psychopathic – it has no conscience. It rings a bell and the young man in the middle of writing a poem must close his notebook and move to different cell where he must memorize that man and monkeys derive from a common ancestor."

This is the militarization of schools I keep talking about, and like the military, it quashes individualism and excellence in favor of conformity and subservience.

Bad jobs report shows that the phony economic recovery is revealing itself.

As a result, the public continues to worry that a private for-profit corporation is responsible for stopping a public tragedy."

What a crock. If the government seized BP, it would unambiguously work in the politicians' interest, not the public's. By being responsible to shareholders and liable for damages, BP will do the best it can to limit the damage. Case in point: the Obama administration has been blocking resources from being used in the cleanup for political reasons, not BP.

If unemployment checks are so good at creating jobs, and the feds have been paying people not to work since the recession started in 2007, where are the jobs?

Congress can't even figure out how to travel to investigate the oil spill,but they want to plan every aspect of our lives.

Because Obama waited over two months to allow foreign help on the Gulf oil spill, the largest skimmer in the world is just reaching the Gulf where it still aways permission to begin cleanup. There's that permission word again.

""While the ship is ready to work, it still doesn't have approval to engage in the effort," said Frank Maisano, spokesman for TMT Shipping, the vessel's owner and operator, in a statement."

Don't tell me Obama is inexperienced or out of touch or any other crap. Obama knows darn good and well what he's doing when he blocks foreign aid, blocks states from implementing plans to protect themselves, and makes resources sit around idle. He's harming us on purpose.

It may be ironic that environmentalism caused the greatest environmental disaster in US history for forcing BP to drill in deep water, but it was also completely predictable. Don't tell me about unintended consequences. That's baloney.

BP didn't prepare for hurricane during the oil spill because government regulations didn't make them do it. That's the point about regulations. They take away responsibility from the businesses they regulation. They drag everybody down to the lowest common denominator of the regulation. In a free market, an insurance company would have forced BP to do the work.

POLICE STATE:

Prosecutors can test hair to see where people have visited or make up evidence to frame them. And of course this evidence would be presented by an expert paid and protected by the prosecution so no jury would ever question it. One of the problems with experts is juries have no way to judge their honesty. Any party who wants to employ an expert in a trial should have to pay the other side to employ a corresponding counter-expert.

POLITICS:
