Free kibbles

Some military lawyers balk at the Guantanamo tribunals.

Reason on Ron Paul's book and message.

McCain presents vision of the future at end of his first term. This is probably a good idea to attract people to his vision, but it's also necessarily vague. This is also a good move because the press loves the idea of weekly press conferences with the president and British-style Q&A sessions with Congress. That guarantees this speech will get tons of positive coverage.

Death toll from China's earthquake could top 50,000.

Ants in Houston. No doubt.

Ohio shoots itself in the foot again. The legislature approved, and Gov. Strickland will sign, caps on payday loans - short term loans that charge a nominal fee to cover their risk and generate profit. The caps will make it impossible for payday loan companies to operate in Ohio. Cash America has announced it will close 139 offices in Ohio, and others will immediately follow suit. Our government just drove thousands off jobs out of Ohio and took away a critical service for many, some of whom will probably leave the state as well for states where they can do their business as they see fit. We are being crushed by a bunch of authoritarian aristocrats.

How come when a bank charges you money, it's a fee, but when a payday loan place does it, it's an interest rate? I think this whole thing was orchestrated by the banking industry because they were losing some of their outrageous fees to payday loan companies. Now they have government enforced monopoly on finances, loans and outrageous fees.

Even though polar bears are at record numbers and are more successful than ever in recorded history, eco-nuts won a huge political victory by having them declared an endangered species. By doing so, eco-nuts can leverage that status to further harm the development of the human species, forcing more poor people to stay poor and die in squalor. This shows how, despite the best intentions, every power the people surrender to government gets twisted and used to harm them.

We're already getting trounced in this new Cold war by China and Russia alone, and now they want to bring India and Brazil into their alliance. How can we be losing India and Brazil to China and Russia? Our foreign policy is asleep at the wheel and has been since Clinton took office. Clinton opened the barn door and prodded the horses to run to China, and Bush has ignored the larger threat while he plays patty-cake with China and Russia's proxy states. Cato contends that NATO's expansion, as ineffectual as it was, helped push China and Russia into an alliance, and continuing threats of NATO expansion is driving the expansion of that alliance. After the fall of the Soviets, we should have declared NATO a job well done and ended it. We should have ended our security welfare to Europe, made them stand on their own 2 feet, be adults, and develop their own defenses in response to the new security situation that developed. Instead, we're stuck with a new Cold War, and we're not fighting it because we won't even acknowledge it.

The California Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage.

Barack Hussein Obama let a horse of his own out of the barn - he used his middle name to explain why Arabs might like him. If he wants to use it to his political advantage, that makes his middle name fair game for everybody.

Now that the Clintons have been on the wrong end of the mainstream media's horrible bias, she recognizes that Foxnews is far and away the most fair and balanced news on TV.

What business is of the Federal government's is it if local first responders unionize or not? That should be up to the local governments.

Illustrating the lunacy of socialized medicine, how it gives government the power to control people's lives, Canadian politician proposes and income tax credit for healthy people. I'm sure this idea is hugely popular with many, but anybody who supports this idea is literally surrendering their lives to government. If government can reward healthy behavior, it can also punish unhealthy behavior with taxes, fines, or health boot camps. It can mandate certain activities, diets, supplements, medicines, exercise regimen, etc. in the name of promoting health. It's all for the good of the people (pat them on the head) that we give a few aristocrats that ultimate power over our lives.

Comcast and Cox are slowing bittorrent traffic at all hours.

This post provides some entertaining points about the suicide of America.

I know I read this essay on the dumbing down of America before (really), and I'm sure I posted it, but I couldn't find it, so I'm linking it again.
