Article discusses how society ignores dumb laws that are on the books because of political failure, and uses prescription drugs as an example, but this article fails to point out this situation, all caused by political failure, undermines he rule of law and creates huge social problems. This article implies this is a good thing. It's not. The right answer is to end the political failure and simplify our laws, not undermine the rule of law by ignoring them. The crime and institutional criminal justice problems we face every day are a result of this political failure.

Sec. of State Rice encourages Russian human rights activists then claims she doesn't want to interfere in Russian affairs. She can't have it both ways. I think she wanted to tweak Putin because of his aggressive anti-Americanism and his power grabs. Rice worries about Kremlin power. Did she just notice? Apparently she isn't that worried because she hasn't even acknowledged the new Cold War of Terror being waged against us by Russia and China utilizing their proxies North Korea, Iran, Syria and now Venezuela.
Gen. Sanchez is correct that the "surge" in Iraq is a desperate attempt to make up for years of failure. But it seems he's failed to notice its working. If Sanchez had pushed for a counterinsurgency strategy when he was the commander in Iraq, maybe we would have won by now. Surely the lions share of the blame for failures in Iraq falls on Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Bremer, but there's plenty left over for Democrats, Sanchez, Casey and the Iraqi government. Sanchez is just trying to shift his share of the blame.
Democrats may provide immunity to telecoms for their assistance in fighting the war on terror. It sounds stupid to have to even report that, but there it is. Many liberals want to punish telecoms for helping fight our enemies. I think all this bluster about the telecoms was just pandering to the loony left. No grown up can honestly think we should punish companies for assisting the war effort at the request of the government. I think this was a fait accompli from the beginning. Many Democrats will vote against it to appease their loony base, but it will pass.
China's export boom is fueled by companies that have fled the US to China because of our punishing income tax. Even China has better tax policy than we do. Adopt the FairTax.

Oil hits new high on supply worries. This just puts more money in Iran's and Russia's coffers while draining our resources. It's a shift in power from the free world to despots. We could ease the supply worries and lower prices by drilling for oil in the US. We could ease the demand by building clean coal and nuclear plants. Opponents of US drilling need to explain why they are more concerned about the convenience of caribou and fish than the human lives lost in the war on terror. Opponents of clean coal and nuclear power need to explain why they are willing to allow people to die in the war on terror instead of building these plants. Opponents of both need to explain why they think it's good to shift power and wealth from the free world to despots.

Bjorn Lombard exposes Gore's lies.
Rudy Giuliani vows fiscal restraint. I have a question for supposed Reagan Republicans. Did you agree with Reagan that government was too large and too intrusive in 1980? Did you agree that in 1980, government was the problem, and people freed from government were the solution? If you did, then you must support cutting government to pre-1980 levels. That means cutting our federal budget by more than half.
Fiscal restraint is Republican code for statism. For Republicans, fiscal restraint means growing our titanic government at 5% instead of the 6% annual rate Democrats prefer. Republicans love to rail against the size of government, but every election, Republicans at best want to continue growing government, just at a slightly smaller rate than Democrats want, no matter how titanic our government is. Bush did much worse. We need massive cuts in the size and scope of government, not the statism promised by fiscal restraint.
I'll believe in Reagan conservatives when they draw a line in the sand and demand cutting government back to pre-1980 levels.
Europe, like China, is catching and on a trajectory to surpass the US because they have VAT taxes and we have the punish federal income tax. The answer is easy: adopt the FairTax.

Anybody who is surprised that 2 New England liberals are the leading candidates for the Republican nomination has been deluding themselves. This is is who conservatives and Republicans are, and except for the few years of the Reagan revolution, always have been. If conservatives and Republicans really believed in Reagan's libertarian ideals of small government staying out of people's lives, the Reagan years wouldn't have been a revolution. Americans are starving for a Reagan libertarian, but one that is more effective than Reagan was at reducing the size and scope of government. Unfortunately the socialists who have dominated conservatives and Republicans except during Reagan's revolution, gave us religious socialist George Bush, Trent Lott, John McCain, John Boehner, and other men who think ever bigger government is the answer, not the problem.

We were a lot better off when we didn't care if people liked us. We cared about family, freedom and success, and we were good at all of them. Everybody respected us then. What does global warming have to do with peace? Al Gore and the IPCC jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize, and Cato comments on Gore's climate lunacy and avoidance of debate. The author is not happy. It seems to me Congress should have done this back in the 20s, not today.
IRS records show that the rich are relatively richer than any time since the 20s. I'm surprised only half of Senators are millionaires. Cato disputes that the rich are getting rich faster than the poor. Maybe Cato has missed the news about CEO salaries. Of course the rich are getting richer faster. They have the resources to manipulate and capitalize on the outrageous government regulations, subsidies and direct payouts from government. The poor have not. Companies spend tremendous resources dealing with the tax code, lobbying, and navigating government regulations, resources that don't go to workers or investment, and therefore the people at the top are making more money than the people at the bottom.

In order to combat high education costs, Democrats propose to inject more money into the system, creating more demand. Needless to say, this will increase prices, not reduce them. Hillary wants to remove the payroll tax limit to fund social security. The payroll tax limit is currently indexed to the benefit. Raising the payroll tax limit will not change the benefit for people earning over the current limit, so it will remove the index. A better solution is to find a plan to completely faze out social security over time without cutting existing obligations. The plan should include downgrading benefits for younger and younger people until at some young age, those people will never be saddled with social security and adopting the FairTax to support the baby boomers.

Democrats plan $1 trillion tax hike over 10 years. This is another nail in the coffin of their chances in 2008. Republicans offer an alternative simplified tax plan that is considered too radical. Political discussion tends to degenerate into belief versus belief because both sides tend to ignore the facts. The million dollar question is how do we change the debate so that all debaters work with facts instead of biases. How much more proof do people need that the 2 parties are so similar that it doesn't matter?
I have a far better idea. Adopt the FairTax, dramatically cut the size of government and the tax rate, and let Americans save their own money tax free for their own retirement.
Pat Buchanan correctly exposes 3 pillars of belief that have failed Republicans and Bush, but he is mistaken about free trade. Free trade is not the reason we are hemorrhaging jobs, running record trade deficits, and the dollar is falling: our federal taxes are. Every major US trading partner has adopted a business friendly VAT tax that rebates taxes on exports and taxes imports, our tax structure embeds a 22% price penalty, on average, on every product and service made in America. Therefore, whenever an American product competes with a foreign product, at home or abroad, the US product is penalized by our embedded tax.
The solution is to adopt the FairTax. Our exports will have no embedded taxes. All products sold in America, foreign and domestic, will have a 23% embedded tax, putting American made goods and services on a level playing field with our trading partners. And Americans, who are still the most productive workers in the world, will win. Did I mention that everybody gets to keep 100% of their paychecks too? And there's no tax penalty for saving money?

He also discusses Sandy Berger's role as Hillary adviser. I have a theory of why Hillary would do this. Those documents Berger destroyed showing Bill Clinton's weakness fighting terrorism would have damaged Hillary's campaign, so the Clinton's struck a deal with Berger. If he would destroy the documents, the Clintons would bring him back into their political machine. I think this is Hillary's first step toward rehabilitating Berger for a higher office. Bill Salmon suggested Sec. of State, no less. That's going to be a hard sell, since they defended Berger's actions as saying he was absentminded. I don't think America wants an absentminded Sec. of State, let alone a serious criminal busted for stealing and destroying classified documents, obviously for the political gain of the Clintons.

The Health Care Dictator
The Health Care Dictator
by Mark Luedtke
One of many big lies about U.S. health care is that we have a free market system. In fact, 60% of all health care expenditures in the U.S. are paid by taxpayers. That means our system is already 60% socialized, and that's the root of our current problems. Hillary Clinton wants to make it 100%.
Because the federal government had instituted a wage freeze during WWII, in 1942 the government created a tax break, a health insurance subsidy, so companies could reward workers with 3rd party payer health insurance. The result was a sudden increase in demand for health care services with no change in supply, driving up the price. Increased prices hurt the poor, so government pumped more money into health care, further increasing demand, and further driving up prices. We've continued this spiral at an ever increasing rate ever since. Because Americans don't pay for our own health care anymore, we're not very healthy, further driving up demand and prices. Quality of service also suffers because health care providers must satisfy 3rd party payers, not patients.
A nightmare of regulations at all levels of government compounds the problem. Every government dollar and regulation increases government, health insurance company, and health care provider bureaucracies. Decades of regulations have turned insurance companies, hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices into reflections of expensive, wasteful, government bureaucracies. Doctors spend 14% of their income filing paperwork. Hospitals spend 25%.
Despite the government involvement in our health care system being the root of our current problems, Hillary's plan demands significantly more government involvement.
If elected, Hillary would dictate that every individual in America carry comprehensive health insurance, pretending this is like mandatory car insurance. She doesn't mention that car insurance only covers catastrophes, not maintenance, nor does she mention states' significant non-compliance. Hillary “envisions” a day when she dictates that all Americans will have to show proof of health insurance in order to get a job,but not illegal immigrants although her plan will cover them.
Hillary would dictate that every employer provide health insurance for their employees or pay a punishing tax to the federal government. Our biggest economic problem right now is that our archaic federal tax structure is driving businesses out of America to business friendly countries. Hillary's dictate will exacerbate that problem.
Hillary would dictate an expansion of government supplied health insurance to compete with private health insurance by opening up the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program to everybody, allowing younger people to buy into Medicare, and by expanding SCHIP to cover well-off families who currently buy their own insurance. Medicare is currently going broke even faster than Social Security, and this will accelerate its demise. All these dictates will transfer business from the private sector to the government, further reducing competition in the private sector leading to higher prices and poorer service.
Hillary would dictate that insurance companies could not refuse nor charge higher rates for people with higher risk. Premiums for healthy people would rise dramatically to subsidize the expenses of those unhealthy people, driving up prices.
The health care dictator learned one lesson since her disastrous socialized medicine plan of 1993 – marketing. She claims this program will cost only $110 billion and add no new bureaucracy. Both claims are false. Every dollar spent, and experts say it will be much more expensive, increases costs and the existing bureaucracies of government, insurance companies, and health care providers. Each dictate does the same. Just like all the government money spent on health care since WWII, the new funds will further drive up the cost of both insurance and health care, forcing more Americans to illegally go without health insurance.
Hillary knows her plan will fail because she designed it that way. Then she can force socialized medicine on us. Socialized medicine advocate Timothy Noah recognizes this in Slate, "The best argument in [Hillary's plan's] favor is that it probably won't work and that when it doesn't, the federal government will have an opportunity to take over. This time, though, the path to single-payer health insurance (shhhhhh!) seems a bit smoother." If elected, Hillary's plan is the last, flawed step before complete socialized medicine.
Some Republican plans aren't much better. Mitt Romney and Arnold Schwarzenegger both implemented state plans with similar dictates. Massachusetts residents have ignored the individual coverage mandate in such large numbers that the government was forced to forgo that dictate. Both plans are doomed like Hilllary's. Plans advocating health saving accounts would offset some damage from government subsidies and 3rd party payers, but they are still big government plans based on manipulating the income tax devastating our economy.
A better solution is to adopt the FairTax and deregulate to end 3rd party payer system. The FairTax would replace all federal taxes including the 22% average embedded tax in all American-made products and services with a 23% inclusive sales tax. Every American would keep 100% of his paycheck and save that money with no tax penalty. All corporate taxes and tax subsidies would disappear. This would dramatically reduce the government money and mandates that have broken our health care system. Competition would flourish. Prices would drop. Service would improve. Americans would pay for their own, inexpensive health care and catastrophic insurance and become more healthy. Freedom is the answer to our health care problems, not a dictator.

We have a bigger government than ever, huge deficits, titanic, punishing income tax, more drug users than ever, more Americans in jail for drug use than ever, better funded enemies than ever, we lost Russia just like we lost China and the 2 are allied run us into the ground, and they're succeeding by using terrorist proxies to drain our resources. I could go on and on.
Granted, we haven't had a second 9/11, and that's no trivial issue. But on every other front, Republicans have failed us almost as badly, and sometimes worse, than even Democrats.
Republican pollster thinks Republicans can pick up seats in the House. I agree. They were punished in 2006, but Democrats have performed so poorly, and Hillary is so energizing for Republicans, that Republicans are likely to regain seats. Of course, I think they'll hold the presidency as well.

Peggy Noonan explains the Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton trance, and hopes to see it ended. She'll get her wish. Troops brought home after 729 days, 1 day short of earning college funding benefits. I find it hard to believe that's a coincidence. If somebody did that in a misguided attempt to save money, that person should be fired and those troops should get the college benefit.
6 months ago, the Iranian government couldn't get more than a dozen people to protest outside the British embassy after kidnapping those British servicemen and woman. But after Columbia promoted Ahmadinejad in the eyes of the Iranians by first giving him a platform, then attacking him with no substance, making him look like hero facing the lion in his own den, 10s of thousands protest with Ahmadinejad against Israel. Nice job, Columbia. Way to generate a bunch of domestic support for the Mullahs just when their government was on the verge of crumbling from the inside.

Are the Olympics a trap for the communist Chinese government? I doubt it. They'll crush dissent before it can organize for the cameras, and even if pro-democracy reformers organize and are crushed for all the world to see, we'll forget it when we buy our next cheap Chinese T-shirt or DVD player.

Chinese made Boy Scout Medals recalled because of high lead content. Is nothing sacred? Not even Boy Scout Medals? Obviously the Boy Scouts should get the most cost-effective medals they can for the good of their organization, but this just seems so wrong even without the high lead content. With the high lead content, it stirs up visions of the mean Chinese trying to poison our Boy Scouts. Fortunately, I'm not a liberal, so I don't let that kind of emotion interfere with my views on policy, but it seems pretty obvious that the hidden costs of products from China are not being considered when we decide where to buy from. If we have to test every product for safety, and we damn well better, then Chinese made goods aren't as cheap as they seem.
Just because some idiots didn't cook their hamburgers thoroughly enough, forcing a titanic recall, the nation's second largest supplier of meat has to declare bankruptcy. We've all learned that e coli is in beef, especially hamburger. You have to cook your hamburger medium at least to insure it gets killed. Sure, companies have safety procedures to limit the e coli, but it can be in any hamburger you buy, so citizens should cook their hamburgers enough. It seems Topps had a problem in controlling e coli, but if everybody had cooked their hamburgers thoroughly enough, nobody would have gotten sick, and Topps would still be in business.

While his wife, Hillary Clinton, is advocating the biggest move toward socialism in the history of the United States, Bill Clinton praises French President Sarkozy, supposedly for his "can-do" attitude. This is informative since Sarkozy beat France's socialist clone of Hillary, Chloe Sevigny, and advocates dramatic free market reform in France. Even Bill doesn't support Hillary's socialistic positions. I guess it's not surprising. Only a tiny minority of Americans support socialism.
Scientists extract rock from 2.5 miles deep in San Andreas fault.
Scientist is prepared to create first artificial life form. I've been wrong on every big, new technological trend in my life, and I have tons of monetary losses to prove it, so I'm probably wrong when I say, "So what?" People are going to be supplanted by computers with more computing capacity than our brains in 20 years or so. I guess if this scientist could develop a bug that kills most of us before then, it would affect history, but otherwise, he's going the wrong direction. Why do I care about about man-made viruses or new cells? The future lies in integrating people with machines, or having machines treat us as ants, algae, or worse. I prefer to integrate.
Don't get me wrong. This work could help people who might otherwise die from genetic diseases in that time, including me for all I know. But in the long run, machines will write the histories, not people as we know them. Better to be part of the machine than part of the natural history museum like dinosaurs.
I don't even want to contemplate how wimpy and twisted this sounds: US conciliatory over missile defense program. That's right. We're apologizing for protecting Europe from nuclear missiles.
Far right Republicans beholden to abortion rights rule out 3rd party run. This shows the caustic effects of Roe-v-Wade on the nation. A huge number of voters on both sides live and die by the litmus test of abortion, and that issue swamps national elections. We should overturn Roe-v-Wade, return abortion as an issue the states where it belongs, so the nation can become receptive to the other issues that face us.
No other issue in America, not even the Iraq war, is so divisive.
Nobody should have to set aside their principles - that's how government got away from us to begin with. Removing abortion from the national stage would be a great first step towards taking back control of our government for the people.

Illegal aliens are leaving Arizona, self-deporting, in advance of a new law that would require employers to check records of employees. Employers found in violation of the law will lose their business permits, first temporarily, then permanently for a repeat offense. Like I've said repeatedly, the solution to the illegal immigrant problem is to have employers check their employees citizenship. I've said illegal aliens will self-deport in this case. We don't need a fence. We just need to remove the economic incentive (jobs) for them to come here. This is exactly what we're seeing in Arizona. Businesses will adapt and thrive on legal labor. This isn't hard.

Yet another study shows that solar output is the main driver of climate change. Author mistakenly blames the free market for failing to deliver certain products. What stopped a native American from making shoes tailored to native Americans? Most likely a lack of demand, contrary to what the author thinks. Or lack of capital investment because of over-regulation. If we had a much freer market and a real demand, this demand would have been addressed long ago.

Do we need a news article to tell us the House is as partisan as ever? These 2 parties have to work overtime to convince Americans there's a difference. Fred Thompson thought the Senate was a waste of time. Fred Thompson on federalism. You just don't see this kind of well thought out and presented arguments from politicians anymore. Except for Newt. Austin Bay is impressed with Rudy Giuliani's foreign policy goals. He claims no other candidate has shown such mastery of the problems we have. But all Giuliani has done is identify what normal Americans and critics have been pointing out for decades. Our government doesn't work. The bureaucracies are like medieval fiefdoms, they don't respond to our elected officials and therefore they are unaccountable to the people. The idea that Giuliani can impose some kind of new culture on these monstrosities is ludicrous. He might as well try to impose a new culture on a T-Rex. We need to gut them. Only after we dramatically shrink them can we change their culture by rebuilding them from the ground up. Giuliani is not bold enough to do this. They will continue along their merry way oblivious to whichever statist candidate we elect.

Praise for Ron Paul
Please. Did you have to wait for months to cherry pick such a bad email? Pat yourself on the back some more. You took a shot at Ron Paul, and nobody has been so bold. Except every other scared, Republican statist. How many stupid emails do you think statists like Giuliani and McCain get a day? I can just imagine all the email the Hillary Clinton of the Republicans gets. (Romney, if you didn't get it.) You're probably just jealous.
The US needs fantastic government reform, the kind of reform the founding fathers implemented centuries ago, but the Republicans have proven they're part of the problem, not the solution. It's sad that the leading Republicans advocate at most, minor tweaks to our government. For all Ron Paul's foibles and even his mistaken view on pulling out of Iraq, he's a far better candidate for America than anybody else the 2 parties have.

The same people who misusing customer privacy don't want the telecoms to help save lives in the war on terror will probably love having telecoms tap their phone calls to so they can tailor ads to the conversation. US missile defense system is up and running. So much for all the nay sayers who said it couldn't be done and we shouldn't even try. Of course it could be done. It was just another technological problem to be solved. I guess they were satisfied with mutually assured destruction. I prefer to live.
Another casualty of the war on Americans, purposely misnamed the war on drugs.
Because of the weak dollar, foreign companies are buying US companies at a record pace. This means that money used to stay in the US is now flowing to other countries. Adopt the FairTax to keep American companies in America, to keep jobs in America, and to keep our critical technology in America.
Bush vetoes bill that would allow the government to take money from taxpayers by force to provide health insurance for children of families who are plenty well off to buy insurance themselves. This is only Bush's forth veto. I wonder if somebody had to show him how to do that. Democrats are going to make hay out of this sound bite issue by claiming Bush denied insurance to poor children, but that's a sad misrepresentation of the actual bill they passed.
North Korea agrees to do the same thing it already agreed to do six months ago, but didn't actually do - shut down it's nuclear reactor. North Korea never lives up to its agreements, and this will be no different. I wonder what we gave them for their repeated non-compliance. In the mean time they're transferring their materials and technology to Syria and Iran while playing us for fools.
Illegal immigrants are counted in the census, so they could trigger congressional seat changes in 2010.
British schools, required to show An Inconvenient Truth, will also be required to give a warning about political bias. This is an improvement. I don't think the government should force schools to show this film, but if I was a science or civics or government or social studies teacher, I would show An Inconvenient Truth one day and The Great Global Warming Swindle the next, and have the students write an essay on the politics and the science.

They predicted 4 large hurricanes, and we only got 2, and they both hit largely unpopulated areas of Mexico. They're trying to hard to scare people with these storms that might become tropical depressions. It's funny and sad all at once.

Blackwater defends fire first policy. Duh. If you don't fire first, you get killed. These hearings are nothing more than political gamesmanship. On the other hand, I don't understand all this hand-wringing about what laws apply to Blackwater. They're in Iraq, so Iraqi law applies. If Iraq gives them diplomatic immunity, that's still Iraqi law. What's the confusion?
I find myself agreeing with James Carville again. That's twice. I feel kind of sick. He said that Democrats' prospects are so good only because of the complete implosion of the Republican party. If Republicans figure that out, they'll win again 2008. And while Bush and Boehner have started paying lip service to limited government, neither as figured out that both have zero credibility. For Republicans to win, they have to oust their leadership of the last 8 years, and they show no signs of doing that.
In a related story, Ron Paul matches John McCain by raising over $5 million this quarter. Ron Paul is the only Republican who stands for significant reform instead of minor tweaks on the status quo.

Federal law should not mandate lower loans to military personnel any more than it should mandate anything else in the free market. Plenty of businesses respect military personnel and provide lower rates and flexibility. That's the free market at work. If military workers can't fulfill short term loans, the military should change their pay structure so they can.
Britain's NHS socialized medicine program ranks 17th out of 29 European nations, ahead of only the most poor countries in Europe. It's no surprise to any reasoned and informed person that countries that have free market systems rank at the top in Europe in health care service. It's time for the socialists to give up their religion and do what's best for Americans - support free markets. No economic system is superior.
