We Endanger Liberty

We Endanger Liberty

by Mark Luedtke

Democracy is no friend to liberty. Despite the way we throw around the word 'democracy' today, a true democracy is arguably the most dangerous form of government ever devised. America's Founding Fathers knew the dangers of democracy well; the tyranny of the majority is backed by the inherent power of the people and under the guise of populism, it can steal economic and political freedom from the minority. We're each a minority of one, and every individual in a democracy is subject to the tyranny of the rest.

But despite the Framers' efforts, creating a Constitutional Republic with restricted powers for government, the majority in America can still force tyranny on minorities, especially at the local level. The only thing protecting freedom from us is our self-control, but our self-control is failing.

For example, Yellow Springs is considering annexing a contiguous section of land called Fogg Farm to enable growth. In traditional American fashion, citizens of Yellow Springs and their Village Council debated the issue. The people expressed a variety of opinions. The council listened and presented data to the people for further discussion. This is the great American political process in action, and it should result in Village Council making a decision in the best interests of the community at large.

But activists are already calling for a referendum. It's hard to argue with the idea that the people should vote on major decisions affecting the community, and that's why a tyranny of the majority is so dangerous. The individuals who make up the majority always have personal reasons for their positions, more-so than the elected council entrusted with the good of the community.

Real estate in Yellow Springs is unusually high priced for this area. The Yellow Springs newspaper and website claim that's because there's high demand to move to Yellow Springs, but demand is always relative to supply, and that claim hides the real story. Real estate is high because the the community hasn't allowed any new development in decades. Real estate prices have been made artificially high because the people of Yellow Springs have unnaturally restricted the supply of housing by deliberately stunting the community's growth.

Years of policy stunting growth artificially inflated property values. Worse, if the old adage that a community that isn't growing is dying is true, then Yellow Springs is committing suicide. Village Council doesn't want that beautiful, unique downtown strangled by its own people. But any new development would undermine the artificially inflated property values that decades of no growth policy created. It's hard to imagine anybody would buy one of the tiny, old existing homes in Yellow Springs if they could buy a nicer, new home at Fogg Farm, cheaper.

Worse for Yellow Springs, the Fogg Farm developer can still develop the property even if Yellow Springs votes not to annex it. It's possible that Yellow Springs will have no say in the development and be stuck picking up part of the tab for services for the development even if they don't annex it. But the developer's options are limited if Yellow Springs doesn't annex, so annexing is a win-win for both the developer and the community. Yellow Springs would thrive as a result of the new development, and property values would return over time. But a tyranny of the majority could derail the plans.

Annexing Fogg Farm is a no-brainer, but it's hard to imagine Yellow Springs home owners voting to undermine their property values, so Village Council will likely end up at odds with home owners. The result of a referendum will be no growth because of restricted economic freedom and continuing slow suicide for the community.

A tyranny of the majority against Jessica Minesinger of Troy turned ugly. Years ago, the Troy city council approved her Summerfield development, but Troy activists managed to get the zoning issue for Summerfield on the ballot in a referendum. Troy voters voted down the zoning for her development. This ever more acrimonious battle has been going on for years, with Troy's city council approving the zoning change, activists putting it on the ballot, and the majority of Troy voters stopping the development.

This battle expanded into the courts, with each side suing the other. The activists paid fines instead of answering the subpoenas, but Jessica Minesinger is still unable to develop the property, even though she did the hard work to get City Council approval.

Thanks to the growing nanny society and the subsequent change in attitude from self-reliance and self-determination to government domination of our lives, voters have increasingly forgone self-control to force their will on minorities. Both parties are destroying liberty in America, blessed by our votes. We've lost our regard for freedom and desire to exercise vigilance in support of liberty.

The new smoking ban in Ohio, forced on private business owners by a meddling majority of Ohio voters, is an egregious attack on freedom. The self-righteous majority that passed the Constitutional amendment granting government the power to direct private businesses owners in their operations opened the door to a new extreme of government control over private property rights. It turns out that we and our neighbors, wielding democracy like a blunt instrument, are more dangerous enemies of liberty than any overt enemy.

The cartels make a lot more money smuggling drugs, mostly cocaine, than they do smuggling people. Our war on drugs is enriching and empowering the Mexican drug cartels and feeding corruption far greater than alcohol prohibition ever did. It also empowers the Taliban to kill NATO allies in Afghanistan, and empowers drug gangs throughout the US. It has also killed and imprisoned millions of Americans. The misnamed War on Drugs is really a war on Americans, and we're funding our enemies so they can defeat us. The only reasonable solution is to legalize and control drugs like we did alcohol.

Three terrible candidates

In response to George Will's preposterous claim that McCain, Giuliani, and Romney are all good candidates:

It's dangerous that leading conservatives like George Will have decided that continually surrendering freedom to government year after year is somehow "good," and even comparable to "perfect." Giuliani, McCain, and Romney aren't three good candidates at all - they are three horrible candidates, any one of which will end up being slightly better than the even worse Democrat. Continually voting for the lesser of two evils like these candidates has empowered government to steal our freedom at an ever accelerating pace for nearly a century.

None of these candidates comes close to supporting good government. None support a complete freeze on spending growth. None support the FairTax. None support abolishing the Department of Education. None support getting the government out of the business of health care. None support freedom.

Not only are they terrible for supporting the status quo instead of necessary reform if freedom is going to survive, but they each support further gross restrictions of freedom. McCain would jail Americans for exercising our innate right to free speech enumerated in the First Amendment. Giuliani would jail Americans for exercising our innate right to keep and bear arms enumerated in the Second Amendment. Romney would raise taxes for socialized medicine. We know these things because the candidates already have a track record on these issues, yet George Will and conservatives consider them good candidates.

America needs reform, and these candidates are anything but reformers. America needs to stop the growth of government power in it's tracks, and these candidates will do just the opposite.

It's scary that prominent conservatives can no longer be counted on to fight for freedom, a sad acknowledgment that Reagan was an anomaly, not the norm conservatives claim, and now consider the quick erosion of liberty by anti-freedom candidates as "good," and comparable to "perfect."

You can't help but laugh at the irony that Democrats think it's OK for Clinton to fire all 92 Federal prosecutors, but it's not OK for Bush to fire 8. Democrats are just upset that they lost 8 liberal prosecutors who they could count on to protect Democrats. And they're going to end up making political hay with this issue instead of being exposed as the hypocrites they are.

The prohibition is 10 times worse than the drugs themselves. UN forsees Afghan opium poppy harvest. By the Taliban. Who will use the money to fight NATO troops. Our war on drugs is making our enemies rich and powerful. How stupid are we? Maybe we should just send the Taliban a few billion dollars a year to buy weapons to kill our soldiers instead. It would be cheaper and save American lives compared to the War on Drugs.

Mark Steyn exposes Gore's hypocritical carbon offsets. Oh my goodness, this essay is funny and enlightening.
Al buys his carbon offsets from Generation Investment Management LLP, which is "an independent, private, owner-managed partnership established in 2004 and with offices in London and Washington, D.C.," that, for a fee, will invest your money in "high-quality companies at attractive prices that will deliver superior long-term investment returns." Generation is a tax-exempt U.S. 501(c)3. And who's the chairman and founding partner? Al Gore.

So Al can buy his carbon offsets from himself. Better yet, he can buy them with the money he gets from his long-time relationship with Occidental Petroleum. See how easy it is to be carbon-neutral? All you have do is own a gazillion stocks in Big Oil, start an eco-stockbroking firm to make eco-friendly investments, use a small portion of your oil company's profits to buy some tax-deductible carbon offsets from your own investment firm, and you too can save the planet while making money and leaving a carbon footprint roughly the size of Godzilla's at the start of the movie when they're all standing around in the little toe wondering what the strange depression in the landscape is.

U.S. COMPTROLLER: PRESCRIPTION DRUG BILL 'MAY BE THE MOST FINANCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE LAW IN 40 YEARS'; Bill Will Add $8 Trillion to Long-Term Medicare Obligations
Thu Mar 1 2007 13:41:11 ET

That Could Already Bankrupt the U.S.

The U.S. government's top accountant says the law that added a prescription drug benefit to Medicare may be the most financially irresponsible legislation passed since the 1960s. U.S. Comptroller General David Walker says Medicare -- barring vast reform to the program and the nation's healthcare system -- is already on course to possibly bankrupt the treasury and adding the prescription bill just makes the situation worse. Walker appears in a Steve Kroft report to be broadcast on 60 MINUTES Sunday, March 4 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

"The prescription drug bill is probably the most fiscally irresponsible piece of legislation since the 1960s," says Walker, "because we promise way more than we can afford to keep." He argues that the federal government would need to have $8 trillion today, invested at treasury rates, to cover the gap between what the program is expected to take in and what it is expected to cost over the next 75 years Ð and that is in addition to more than $20 trillion that will be needed to pay for other parts of Medicare. "We can't afford to keep the promises we've already made, much less to be piling on top of them," he tells Kroft.

The problem is the baby boomers. The 78 million people born between 1946 and 1964 start becoming eligible for Social Security benefits next year. "They'll be eligible for Medicare just three years later and when those boomers start retiring en masse, then that will be a tsunami of spending that could swamp our ship of state if we don't get serious," says Walker.

As life expectancies increase and the cost of health care continues to rise at twice the rate of inflation, radical reform in health care will be necessary, Walker says. He says the federal government is also going to have to find ways to increase revenue and reduce benefits. The alternative is ugly. Walker shows Kroft General Accounting Office long-term projections that assume the status quo continues, with the same levels of taxation, spending, and economic growth. By the year 2040, Walker says, "If nothing changes, the federal government is not going to be able to do much more than pay interest on the mounting debt and some entitlement benefits. It won't have money left for anything else...."

Sen, Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, tells Kroft that this problem is well known among members of Congress: "Yes, they know in large measure, Republicans and Democrats, that we are on a course that doesn't add up." And he acknowledges nobody is addressing the matter. Why? "Because it's always easier not to," Conrad says, "because it's always easier to defer, to kick the can down the road to avoid making choicesÉYou get in trouble in politics when you make choices."

Walker believes the biggest problem may be that everything seems okay now, so people don't have the sense of urgency that's needed to make tough choices. But the longer we wait, he argues, the harder it's going to be to solve the problem. "The fact is that we don't face an immediate crisis and so people say, ÔWhat's the problem?' The answer is, we suffer from a fiscal cancer...and if we do not treat it, it could have catastrophic consequences for our country," he tells Kroft.
